On the way back he told me he needed carfare to go back to his West Side apartment. I made out the transportation forms and ran into the afternoon forty-minute coffee break. I asked him to wait, and for about twenty minutes worked on other things. Then I received a call from a worker in the office on the other side that I had a client waiting who was very upset and was upsetting everybody else. I walked into the lunch room, coffee break was in full swing in the form of a card game, and said to the stenographer who I had called in a few days from the card game for something else: “I hate to bust into your game, but I have a client bawling in the office because his uncle died and he’s waiting for transportation.” At this there was general laughter, and I wasn’t sure if I had blundered or had shrewdly found a way to get her too good naturedly get me the cash—a measly 55 cents. I got the cash and came to him and he spoke of being too weak and sick to go home. I gave him a dollar instead and kept the fifty–five cents. I don’t know now if he conned me or simply was hungry and sick.
